How a 2-Minute Questionnaire Can Help You Feel Seen and Supported
"I didn't know what I was feeling had a name."
Whether you're a new parent, a partner supporting someone through a hard season, or simply a human who is overwhelmed by life — emotional struggles can sneak up quietly. It can be difficult to tell the difference between "normal stress" and something more. That's where mental health screening tools come in.
These short, research-backed assessments are often the first step toward understanding what's going on — and getting support that actually helps.
What Are Mental Health Screeners?
Mental health screeners are brief questionnaires that help identify common symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, and emotional overload. They don't give you a diagnosis. They offer something just as important: clarity, language, and a place to start.
The Three Tools We Use Most Often
- PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire) — 2 minutes. Screens for low mood, sleep issues, concentration difficulty, and suicidal ideation. Tracks how symptoms shift over time.
- GAD-7 (General Anxiety Disorder-7) — 2 minutes. Screens for anxious mood, worry, irritability, and restlessness. Brings anxiety into focus even when it's masked as overachievement or burnout.
- EPDS (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) — 2 minutes. Originally developed for the postpartum period; screens for low mood, anxious mood, coping ability, and suicidal thoughts.
